CookenPro 4.0 is USDA Approved

Barrington, IL June 17, 2009

Barrington Software is pleased to announce that its software application, CookenPro CN Version, has again been USDA approved for implementing Nutrient Standard Menu Planning (NSMP).  CookenPro was initially approved in May’2008 with the CN 12 database but each year the USDA releases an updated database and does a check to determine that the new database has been correctly incorporated into the software.  The CN 13 database includes all updates from the USDA Standard Reference 21 Database, including 202 new items.  CookenPro is an affordable software alternative for schools and retirement communities.  The program was evaluated by the USDA Software Evaluation Team, which consists of the Software Evaluation Coordinator and nutritionists at USDA's Food and Nutrition Information Center.  Before the USDA can approve a program, all required functions must be incorporated into and working correctly in the program.   In addition to providing accurate nutrient analysis of recipes and menus, CookenPro provides integrated inventory functions.  Users can create an inventory requisition from a menu, combination of menus, or part of a menu and deduct the quantities from inventory.

About the USDA Software Evaluation and Approval Process The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) developed specifications for a School Food Service Software System needed to support Nutrient Standard Menu Planning (NSMP). The objectives of the software system are to:

  1. Adapt advanced data automation technology to streamline, modernize and standardize school food service nutrient analysis;
  2. Assist schools in implementing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the Recommended Dietary Allowances and achieving the Year 2000 Nutrition Objectives by computing and analyzing the nutritional composition of meals served in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP).
